The Commission released the new communication on the EUSBSR on Friday 23 March 2012. According to that the work will be streamlined along three objectives instead of the four pillars. The Communication is also the need of increased political commitment and alignment of policies. The short version of the new communication is to be found here. A live web chat with Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, will take place on Monday 26 March from 14.30-15.30h CET (Central European Time). Commissioner Hahn will answer questions relating to the plans for cohesion policy during the 2014-2020 funding period.  More instructions on DG Regio web site

Macro-regional strategies should be reflected on all layers of programming for the next period 2014-2020. This was one of the conclusions when Normunds Popens, Deputy Director General, DG Regio when he presented the programming process ahead. Mr. Popens presentation is available here.


Colin Wolfe, Head of Unit of DG Regio, gave the opening speech for the 3rd Working Meeting of the EUSBSR where he officially launched the recently created website for the Strategy. The event takes place on 21-22 March in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The third working meeting 21-22 March 2012 on the future of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea is ready to start - the main topics are:

- Coordination and implementation 2012-2013:funding and facilitation
- Opportunities for programmes in 2012-2013: cooperation and contribution to EUSBSR
- EU2020 and the EUSBSR
- Review of the Action Plan of the EUSBSR
- Embedding the macro-regional concept in national strategic documents and operational programmes for 2014-2020

There are also a series of back to back meetings for e.g. National Contact Points and Priority Area Coordinators already on 20 March. The 3rd working meeting is organised by INTERACT Point Turku in cooperation with DG Regio.

The deadline for project applications within the fifth call of the Baltic Sea Region Programme is on 29 March 2012. The call opened on 9 January 2012.
